Nothing looks more beautiful, or is more fascinating for me to watch than a wave cresting while it’s back-lit by the sun.  A gazillion sparkling gems frame a passage that only one person journeys through.

I think this kind of image is what the soul of surfing is all about.  Some tropical paradise, an emerald wave, you all alone in the line-up, you’re pick of the sets until sunburn and fatigue force you to the beach.  That’s the life.  I have to believe some part of heaven will have something like this.

He paddles with everything he’s worth, concentrating on his core.  He can hear himself breathing, hear his own heartbeat.  Then the back of his board rises, and he feels that mighty push.  With one deft movement, he’s on his feet, keeping his center of gravity low as he races down the face.  His mind is totally clear as he makes this drop on an azure mountain.

I think painting water is one of my favorite things to do.  There are those perfect mornings, when there’s a good swell, you hit it before the crowds show up, and the look of the wave is almost a spiritual experience.  I love trying to capture that with paint.
